    Gas Plume Detection and Tracking in Hyperspectral Video Sequences using Binary Partition Trees

    International audienceThanks to the fast development of sensors, it is now possible to acquire sequences of hyperspectral images. Those hyperspectral video sequences are particularly suited for the detection and tracking of chemical gas plumes. However, the processing of this new type of video sequences with the additional spectral diversity, is challenging and requires the design of advanced image processing algorithms. In this paper, we present a novel method for the segmentation and tracking of a chemical gas plume diffusing in the atmosphere, recorded in a hyperspectral video sequence. In the proposed framework, the position of the plume is first estimated, using the temporal redundancy of two consecutive frames. Second, a Binary Partition Tree is built and pruned according to the previous estimate, in order to retrieve the real location and extent of the plume in the frame. The proposed method is validated on a real hyperspectral video sequence and compared with a state-of-the-art method

    The resting sites and blood-meal sources of Anopheles minimus in Taiwan

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The WHO declared Taiwan free from malaria in 1965, but in 2003 the reporting of two introduced cases in a rural area suggested a possible local transmission of this disease. Therefore, understanding the resting sites and the blood sources of <it>Anopheles minimus </it>is crucial in order to provide information for implementing vector control strategies.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>During a two-year survey, mosquitoes were collected in houses and their surrounding areas and at the bank of larval habitats by backpack aspirators in 17 villages in rural areas of southern and eastern Taiwan for 1 hr. On the same day, blacklight traps were hung downward overnight. Blood-fed mosquito samples were analysed by PCR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 195 total households surveyed by backpack aspirators, no <it>Anopheles </it>adults were collected inside the houses, while a single <it>Anopheles minimus </it>and a single <it>Anopheles maculatus </it>were collected outside of the houses. On the same day, 23 <it>An. minimus</it>, two <it>An. maculatus</it>, two <it>Anopheles ludlowae</it>, two <it>Anopheles sinensis</it>, and one <it>Anopheles tessellatus </it>were collected along the bank of larval habitats. In blacklight traps hung outside of the houses in the villages, 69 <it>An. minimus</it>, 62 <it>An. ludlowae</it>, 31 <it>An. sinensis</it>, and 19 <it>An. maculatus </it>were collected. In larval habitats, 98 <it>An. ludlowae</it>, 64 <it>An. minimus</it>, 49 <it>An. sinensis</it>, and 14 <it>An. maculatus </it>were collected. Of a total of 10 blood-fed samples, <it>An. minimus </it>fed on four animals including bovine (60%), dogs (20%), pig (10%), and non-chicken avian (10%).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p><it>Anopheles minimus</it>, an opportunist feeder in Taiwan, was not collected inside the houses, but was found outside of the houses in villages and surrounding larval habitats. Therefore, an outdoor transmission of malaria is likely to occur and, thus, the bed nets, which are favoured for controlling the late biting of <it>An. minimus</it>, should be a very efficient and effective method for those local residents who sleep outdoors. Additionally, space spray of insecticides for <it>Anopheles </it>at night, as well as residual spray inside animal huts and selective larval habitats, are also helpful to control female adults.</p

    Glycogen synthase kinase-3β inactivation inhibits tumor necrosis factor-α production in microglia by modulating nuclear factor κB and MLK3/JNK signaling cascades

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Deciphering the mechanisms that modulate the inflammatory response induced by microglial activation not only improves our insight into neuroinflammation but also provides avenues for designing novel therapies that could halt inflammation-induced neuronal degeneration. Decreasing glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) activity has therapeutic benefits in inflammatory diseases. However, the exact molecular mechanisms underlying GSK-3β inactivation-mediated suppression of the inflammatory response induced by microglial activation have not been completely clarified. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) plays a central role in injury caused by neuroinflammation. We investigated the regulatory effect of GSK-3β on TNF-α production by microglia to discern the molecular mechanisms of this modulation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to induce an inflammatory response in cultured primary microglia or murine BV-2 microglial cells. Release of TNF-α was measured by ELISA. Signaling molecules were analyzed by western blotting, and activation of NF-κB and AP-1 was measured by ELISA-based DNA binding analysis and luciferase reporter assay. Protein interaction was examined by coimmunoprecipitation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Inhibition of GSK-3β by selective GSK-3β inhibitors or by RNA interference attenuated LPS-induced TNF-α production in cultured microglia. Exploration of the mechanisms by which GSK-3β positively regulates inflammatory response showed that LPS-induced IκB-α degradation, NF-κBp65 nuclear translocation, and p65 DNA binding activity were not affected by inhibition of GSK-3β activity. However, GSK-3β inactivation inhibited transactivation activity of p65 by deacetylating p65 at lysine 310. Furthermore, we also demonstrated a functional interaction between mixed lineage kinase 3 (MLK3) and GSK-3β during LPS-induced TNF-α production in microglia. The phosphorylated levels of MLK3, MKK4, and JNK were increased upon LPS treatment. Decreasing GSK-3β activity blocked MLK3 signaling cascades through disruption of MLK3 dimerization-induced autophosphorylation, ultimately leading to a decrease in TNF-α secretion.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results suggest that inactivation of GSK-3β might represent a potential strategy to downregulate microglia-mediated inflammatory processes.</p

    A two-base encoded DNA sequence alignment problem in computational biology

    The recent introduction of instruments capable of producing millions of DNA sequence reads in a single run is rapidly changing the landscape of genetics. The primary objective of the "sequence alignment" problem is to search for a new algorithm that facilitates the use of two-base encoded data for large-scale re-sequencing projects. This algorithm should be able to perform local sequence alignment as well as error detection and correction in a reliable and systematic manner, enabling the direct comparison of encoded DNA sequence reads to a candidate reference DNA sequence. We will first briefly review two well-known sequence alignment approaches and provide a rudimentary improvement for implementation on parallel systems. Then, we carefully examin a unique sequencing technique known as the SOLiDTM System that can be implemented, and follow by the results from the global and local sequence alignment. In this report, the team presents an explanation of the algorithms for color space sequence data from the high-throughput re-sequencing technology and a theoretical parallel approach to the dynamic programming method for global and local alignment. The combination of the di-base approach and dynamic programming provides a possible viewpoint for large-scale re-sequencing projects. We anticipate the use of distributed computing to be the next-generation engine for large-scale problems like such

    Intraosseous Lipoma of the Proximal Radius with Extraosseous Extension: A Case Report

    Examination of lipomatous tumors with ultrasound (US) is generally limited to the soft tissue component of the mass and cortical contours of the involved bone. We report a patient with an intraosseous lipoma of the proximal radius with extra-osseous extension. US showed a heterogeneous hyperechoic mass lesion (3.5 × 3.0 cm in size) at the radial aspect of the left elbow, with bony cortex interruption. The lesion was associated with increased marginal color flow signals on color Doppler US study. Atypical lipoma or low-grade liposarcoma was diagnosed. The pathologic examination of the lesion demonstrated an abnormal collection of mature adipose tissue consistent with lipoma
